Ger bounced around ships for several years, gaining invaluable experience doing a variety of jobs onboard a ship; from diagnosing problems with an engine to running errands for the ship's captain. Shortly after he turned eighteen, his uncle offered him the opportunity to get onboard a real ship; one that did something more profitable than ferrying landlovers or protecting shipping lanes. His uncle was a man of few words, but what he said mattered in a way that Ger's father's word did not. He thrived onboard the Battleaxe for the five years he was there, and by the time the ship was overwhelmed by MP forces he was the second ranking Enforcer in the gang. They took him into custody with the rest of the men, and Ger spent the next three years rotting in a space jail.
NAME was supposed to be the ultimate prison, totally inescapable for the criminals sent there to die. Only the worst of the worst were sent there, those who were deemed too dangerous to keep on Jovian or those unlucky enough to have been born in space instead of on the planet itself; a spacer has less rights once he starts dealing with a planet's politics, and especially when he's caught stealing from some of that planet's wealthiest citizens.
He and his fellow spacer brothers accomplished the impossible when a group of them orchestrated a massive prison break from the space jail. They did it by introducing a virus that slowly started to eat the coding that kept the space station operational, and as systems started to fail Ger and his fellow convicts made their escape. Some of the criminals were captured by the MP and put back in jail again, but Ger wasn't the only one who managed to make another life for himself; albeit a not-so-law-abiding one.
Ger ended up getting on the ship of an older spacer who'd taken him under his wing, so to speak. Gadget - which they called him because he could fix any gadget - had taken his ship from scrap and redid the wiring totally on his own, before he was arrested for intergalactic fraud. He taught Ger that there was a time and a place for everything, and it was largely Gadget's influence that helped him learn to control his temper as he became a man. Ger will probably never be as militant as he remembers Gadget being, but sometimes when he's about to blow a gasket he thinks of the old man and manages to hold it back. It was on Gadget's ship that Ger and Zac reunited after the buzz about his escape from prison had died down, though he didn't manage to pull her into space long term until he got his hands on a ship of his own.
